The Castle Bluff Energy Center is one of Ameren Missouri’s key investments in strengthening the region’s energy reliability, economic development, and environmental responsibility. Built on a site that previously hosted on-demand generation for the Meramec Energy Center, Castle Bluff will serve as a dependable backup energy source during critical times—such as the hottest summer days, the coldest winter nights, or when renewable energy isn’t generating as expected.
Construction is planned to begin in 2026, with the goal of providing energy to the community by late 2027. The site was selected for its cost-efficiency and strategic advantages. Ameren Missouri already owns the property, and its proximity to existing infrastructure and transmission lines will help reduce overall development and operational expenses.
This project will bring hundreds of construction jobs to the area, create permanent employment opportunities, and deliver new tax revenue to St. Louis County and neighboring communities. Ameren Missouri prioritizes working with local contractors, skilled labor, and diverse-owned businesses to ensure the economic benefits of the project are shared locally.
Castle Bluff will produce lower emissions than the previous facility, even during peak usage periods, reflecting Ameren Missouri’s commitment to environmental stewardship. The energy center will also operate more quietly than its predecessor, reinforcing the company’s role as a long-standing and respectful neighbor in South St. Louis County.
